Implications of Bharat Bill Payment System for neobanks and fintech
1) Neobanks can choose to be either Agents or Customer Operating Units or Biller Operating Units. Neo-banks can become agents of their partner banks and earn a percentage of the issuer interchange.
2) The issuer interchange in BBPS is a fixed amount, while payment gateway charges are a percentage of amount. Therefore, neo-banks can incentivise customers to make bill payments using internal funds transfer or UPI payments.
3) Neobanks can also integrate with BBPS APIs from fintech API players. This approach can enable them to integrate with billers which may not be present in their partner banks.
4) Easy to use interface, minimum clicks to make payments, reminders, data privacy and grievance redressal and dispute resolution would be important in the BBPS implementation.
