One of my mentors recommended a simple framework for regular 1-on-1 check-ins with key stakeholders. The frequency can vary, but the more often the better.
1. Stay in Sync - Ensure you and stakeholders are aligned on priorities, progress, and issues.
2. Generate Ideas - Surface new ways to better support your stakeholders' needs.
3. Build Relationships - Consistent check-ins keep you top-of-mind and enable early feedback.
The framework is straightforward - schedule a meeting and just ask 3 questions in the meeting:
- What's working well?
- What can I do better?
- What's the one thing I can do to help you?
You can do this not just with your boss, but across your stakeholder network.
Consistent communication and a focus on continuous improvement can significantly strengthen those critical working relationships.
